Back-to-school season is here! 🎒 As teachers, children’s ministry leaders, and homeschool parents, we all want one thing for our kids: a positive, encouraging environment where kindness thrives.
But how do you create that culture from day one? The answer might be simpler than you think—a Kindness Challenge!
Hosting a kindness challenge is a fun, interactive way to teach empathy, cooperation, and thoughtfulness in a way kids actually enjoy. Today, I’m sharing why kindness challenges work, how to start one in your classroom, and a FREE printable to make it easy!
Why Kindness Challenges Work
Kids learn best by doing, and kindness is no different. A challenge gives them:
✔ Structure – A clear plan to follow each day.
✔ Excitement – Something new and fun to look forward to.
✔ Accountability – A visible tracker that motivates them to keep going.
When kids see kindness as something exciting—not just another rule—they’re more likely to build it into their everyday life.
3 Tips for Creating a Culture of Kindness in Your Classroom
Before you launch your challenge, lay a strong foundation.
1. Model It Yourself
Kids notice everything. Greet them warmly, compliment their efforts, and show grace when mistakes happen. Your example is the most powerful lesson! REMEMBER...leave your "adult" problems outside the door! ;-)
2. Make Kindness Visible
Create a bulletin board or wall display where students can share acts of kindness they’ve seen or done. This helps them celebrate good choices and inspire each other. Set it up with bright colors, slips of paper, crayons, pencils, etc. Allow the children to fill out their own and hang it on the board/wall.
3. Keep It Fun & Interactive
Add little rewards like stickers, high-fives, or a special class cheer when someone completes a kindness act. The more engaging it is, the more they’ll participate!
